happy halloween and happy birthday Joel

This year I decided to tackle costumes myself, but luckily gave myself enough time to relearn the sewing machine. Owen wanted to be a wizard which is a big change from past years of being rescue personnel. Evie was a witch again so we were able to reuse some of her costume from before, but we made a new skirt with a spiderweb fabric overskirt. Here she is filming Joel opening presents.

For Owen, I made a blue satin tunic that had a belt to hold a velvet bag that held his magic wand. I made a cape out of a nice purple fabric with flocked moons and stars. The beard was the toughest, but once we figured out that hooking it over the ears worked then we in business. He also had a great staff—the branch came from Gramps and we lashed on a stone from the beach in Niantic.

Crushed stone, scorched earth

Monday we decided to place crushed stone into the barn, after we used a compactor on the existing sand. It turned into quite the affair, indeed, since we decided that we would do it by the sweat of our brows. See, I had called my dad, who said, “You’d be surprised at how quickly it goes.”

Coincidentally, we did this on his birthday. So he can just consider his birthday present that we didn’t ask him to come down and help.

Owen got in the mix, though.

Below you can see the first truckload. We’ll likely use up all of the 34 tons that was delivered.
