Tar Heel country
It’s not easy to be spontaneous anymore with Owen, not that we really were before, but we decided to take advantage of a last-minute Continental flight to Asheville, NC. Joel was desperate for warmer weather for riding and it was a good dry-run to see if we could manage luggage, a bike, and Owen since we’re all (Sue, Joel, Owen, and bike) going to visit Rick and Anouk in Holland in May.
We had a good time, though the weather was chilly. On the windiest day we went to Chimney Rock which a big tourist spot. You can hike (if you don’t have a little guy with you) or you can take an elevator to the top of a ridge from which a large rocky outcropping can be reached by stairs (Owen is starting up) which actually bridge the gap between the “chimney” and the ridge. The elevator goes through the rock and was the longest elevator in the state for a short while.Asheville is a nice small city, reminiscent of Oregon or northern California due to the large hippy quotient. It’s not the NASCAR-lovin’ North Carolina I was expecting to see, more like a bunch of laid-back white folks with dreds.
