Owen’s first haircut

image

We finally gave Owen his first haircut. It wasn’t easy getting him to sit still and the high back of the high chair made cutting difficult, but he does look better. The hair was was growing over his ears and getting in his eyes.

I think I’ll try to give him trims more often now that I know I can do it. Having Joel and snacks as distractions certainly helps.

Clam chowder…

image

is the color of the new paint on the walls in Owen’s room. Personally I haven’t had a chowder that yellow, but I do like the color. It had been an orange-coral color with dark wood trim which was kind of dreary. Now with the light trim the room is nice and bright.

I wish I had noted how many hours I spent stripping the varnish from the trim. The trim that we painted this summer in the sunroom is already chipping because of the same varnish finish on the wood so I hoping it will adhere better to bare wood. What a time-consuming, toxic, and tedious job!

I still need to paint another coat of trim color to the door frames and the big window frame so we haven’t moved his bed into the room yet. And I need to paint the doorómaybe a deep blue? I also need to paint the windows themselves, but I’m going to wait for warmer weather. Guess I’m far from done, but at least Owen can move back in and get back to rumaging through his dresser.

Home brew: Day 1

image

We gave our friend Dave a home brew kit for Hanukkah and we started making it last night. It will hopefully resemble Pete’s Wicked Ale in a few weeks. Even though we read the directions, we didn’t really anticipate how long the process would take. You have to boil a bunch of different ingredients like roasted grains and malt and then you have to let it cool a bit so that when you add the yeast it doesn’t get cooked. But when you work with large quantities of liquid it takes a long time for things to boil and likewise to cool.

image

Luckily it was about one of the coldest nights of the season last nightóthe TV had weather alerts saying the windchill could be as low as -30 degrees, so in it only took about 2 hours for the liquid to cool enough. Now it is up in the cool attic bubbling away. Go fermentation!

Hello Po, hello Lala = Hello weird

We thought Owen might like to try out the Teletubbies which we all know is geared for kids only, but only after watching it did we realize that it is almost unwatchable for an adult. Owen did seem to like it since he watched it for at least a five minutes without getting distracted by something like his spatula or a board book. He’ll usually only watches TV if he’s tired and is just hanging out on a lap. What surprised me about the show was they showed a video clipóof a girl gathering things from around the house for her younger sister to play withóand then played the video all over again. Everything is repeated. Everything is repeated.

The best part about TV for Owen are the buttons, not the programs. He’s actually pretty bad about pushing this side table we’ve put in front of the TVóand overloaded with magazines and books to make it heavyóaway so he can muck around with the buttons. He’s actually sneaky about it and saying “no” isn’t doing much good so we’re trying to make a plexiglass barrier to keep his little mitts off the controls. We tried to make one last Sunday, during the Packers game (tough loss). I had cut holes for the VCR and DVD player doors with a Dremel and sanded it and it was looking good until we drilled holes to mount it and it cracked in two. Grrrr!

Today I had surgery (ambulatory surgery) to remove the plate and screws that were used to patch me together after being run over by a car in í97.

image

The surgery went quickly and was so uneventful that I slept through it. Overall, I only spent about three hours at the center. So far I’m not having problems with nausea, or having a great deal of pain. I have a prescription for Vicodin and am taking half a pill at a time to avoid side-effects. The only problem I’ve noticed is a dry throat, so that’s not too bad.

It’s kind of creepy to think that there are seven holes in my clavicle right now. It’s a good thing I like milk!
